In 2008, the Australian skills shortage became less of an immediate issue, as many mining and metals, oil and gas companies and government and public sectors have put projects on care and maintenance, and reduce head count to preserve cash. However, some companies took the opportunity to strengthen their skills sets during this time of increased talent in the market. After 2009, as mothballed and expansionary projects started coming back on line, these industries started ramping up their recruitment effort, only to find the pool was shallower.
